The Dynastic Rulers of Copán
Dec 19th 2011, 11:01

The Maya site of Copán is located in the highlands of western Honduras, and it was occupied by the Maya between about AD 400 and 820. The dynastic line of Copán has several holes in it, and information that we know of its leaders comes from inscriptions on buildings in Copán, with the prosaic names of Structures 10L-16 and 10L-26, Group 10L-2 and the East Court. The only rulers listed are the ones we have names for; there is evidence for others, but we know little of their names or accession dates.

Rulers of Copán

  • K'inich Yax K'uk Mo' or Mah K'ina Yax K'uk Mo', Blue Quetzal Macaw or Sun-eyed Green Quetzal Macaw) ca AD 426-436
  • Mat Head, ca 445-485
  • Cu Ix, ca 485-495
  • Moon Jaguar 553-578
  • Butz' Chan 578-628
  • Smoke Imix God K 628-695
  • 18 Rabbit (Waxaklahun Uban K'awil) 685-738
  • Smoke Monkey 738-749
  • Smoke Shell or Smoke Squirrel 749-763
  • Yax Pasah 763-820
